Paul Whitener, Founding Director Hickory Museum of Art

Paul Whitener,
Founding Director
Hickory Museum of Art

In the early 1940s, the museum’s founding Director, Paul Whitener, boldly declared, “I am going to make Hickory an art center.” Through collaboration, drive, and his innovative spirit, he gathered supporters from across the region, who celebrated the museum’s founding with him on February 4, 1944. Our work today continues Paul’s ambition to champion the importance of creativity and community within the Unifour.

The mission of Hickory Museum of Art is “To bring people together and inspire creativity through the power of art.” This statement, which was crafted in collaboration with the community during our recently completed strategic planning process, reflects not only where we are going, but also our rich legacy of excellence in education and artistic programming.

Contributing to the Annual Fund is an important step in ensuring that Paul’s vision will continue to illuminate life in our community. The Annual Fund supports the operating expenses, staff, and infrastructure that allows the HMA team to impact our region. Already, several businesses and friends of the museum have made gifts toward our goal for the year. We hope that you will celebrate our 75th Birthday by contributing to help us attain the remaining balance of $63,500. Donations received by Fiscal Year End (June 30) will be reflected on the birthday candle we will light on the outside of our building. More importantly, the funds received will help us Light Up the Vision now and for many years to come!
